Ms. Chapman, I enjoyed your appearance at the Warren Newport Library yesterday and thank you for taking the time to speak to us. I found your and your mother's story very interesting. I have been married for 41 years and, as a result of your speech, I learned more about my wife. Her mother died when she was 8. She was then passed from relative to relative. When she was 12 her father married the evil stepmother and my wife was treated like dirt until I finally moved her out when she was 18 and we were married shortly afterwards. After we were married she never wanted contact with any of her relatives, even those that seemed to care for her. I coujld not understand why. Now I understand. The memories were just too painful. Also, interestingly her mother's family all had Christian names and my wife never understood why that was the case. Now we think you have unlocked the clue. We wish you the best and plan to read your books.

Last week I re-read Motherland, and I must tell you that this time around (the third) it spoke to me in some useful yet disturbing ways which somehow I'd missed previously. When the dust settles in my life -- my daughter is visiting from Africa -- I'll be writing you a real letter, including (o, the vanity of it all!) something from my opus, which I've at-last completed (mazel tov).

This first chapter really grabs my interest and I'd like to read the rest this evening! I can't wait until I'm holding the book, turning the pages.
